CESKY TERRIER HEALTH REPORT 2025
27 Puppies born from 5 litters, there is no evidence of popular sires. Although this is a low number the last 3 years have seen very few puppy inquiries as everyone bought dogs during covid lockdowns, hopefully things will improve this year.
The average Coefficient of Inbreeding is 16.6
The Kennel Club have removed the recommendation for eye testing as there is no evidence of eye problems. Last year many Ceskys were eye tested all clear and all previously tested dogs exhibited no signs of Primary Lens Luxation, the Cesky Club maintains the recommendation to eye test particularly before breeding and of course I will continue to record all results sent to me.
Breed watch is back up and running although to date this year only reports from Southern Counties, SKC and National Terrier have been received by the KC. As it is mandatory for all judges to complete this it is disappointing, however the KC will be chasing the offending judges. It is an important tool to monitor existing problems and spot emerging new issues.
Several judges have mentioned nervous dogs when they have judged and this may result in the KC adding temperament to Cesky breed watch in the future. We are currently level 2 for dentition but no dentition issues have been reported this year.
Population Analysis
The Kennel Club have done an in depth population analysis of all breeds which I assisted with. As requested I set up a group of Cesky people including breeders, judges and owners all interested in Cesky health to read and discuss the KCs report and then I sent a feedback form to the KC. I then attended workshops to discuss it further with the KC and put forward ideas and suggestions and I am now writing the foreword for it and have the option to add breed specific material. After lots of discussions and amendments the KC will finalize it, it will available from the KC January 2026.
Health Standard
This is another KC project I assisted on and joined teams meeting with the KC to discuss it, again it is available from the KC.
The Kennel Club’s Health Standard consolidates all relevant health tests for your breed in one place, providing clear guidance on which tests to undertake before breeding and how to do so. The 'Good Practice' category highlights the most critical tests as a starting point, while all breeders are encouraged to aim for the 'Best Practice' level by completing all recommended tests.
